Who am I?
Hello, I am Stephen York, freelance proofreader. I was born in Leicester but now live in Leicestershire. For over 30 years I have been offering on-screen / digital editorial proofreading services (comprising proofreading and collation, paraphrasing and rewriting) from an office near Leicester, in the UK to the book and journal publishing industry, commercial companies, design and advertising agencies, educational institutions and students. In that time, I have proofread over 2,500 books, journal issues, and business documents in a wide range of subject areas. That’s millions of words!

What services do I offer?
Rather than reading paper copy, I offer on-screen and online proofreading and editorial services that include
- proofreading with light editing
- proof collation
- rewriting and condensing text.
Working on screen is more environmentally friendly as it saves on ink, paper, postage, and other resources. I offer proofreading in a wide variety of media in numerous subject areas, some of which are specialty subjects.
Where am I?
I can work from my office in Leicestershire, UK for anyone, anywhere, on electronic files sent by email or FTP sites.
A (very) short history of Leicester and its people
Leicester was an Iron Age settlement encountered by the conquering Romans in AD 47 and was settled to become a Roman town.
Simon de Montfort became Lord of Leicester in 1231, 6th Earl of Leicester, and called two parliaments responsible for stripping Henry II of unlimited powers.
King Richard III passed through Leicester and stayed overnight in August 1485 on the way to the Battle of Bosworth where he was defeated and slain by Henry Tudor’s army. He was buried in Greyfriars Abbey, which was destroyed in Henry VIII’s break with Rome and the Reformation. Richard’s body was later discovered under a car park in 2012, on the site of the former abbey, and later reinterred with full ceremony in nearby Leicester Cathedral in 2015.
Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII’s chancellor, died in Leicester in 1530 and was buried at Leicester Abbey, to later become Abbey Park.
Lady Jane Grey, the nine-day queen, was born in Bradgate Park in 1536.
Leicester was a parliamentary/Roundhead stronghold in the English Civil War before being captured and sacked by Royalists in 1645 and recovered in the same year.
The National Space Centre was set up and opened in June 2001 and has been visited by various astronauts such as Buzz Aldrin, and in 2022 the adjacent Leicester Space Park was opened by British astronaut Tim Peake.
