Rewriting and refining text

Rewriting and refining your text is important as I have said in a previous blog.

After the first draft of your text has been produced by you and/or AI, and before the text is edited is the next stage: of revising to produce a second draft, which involves checking, reviewing, redrafting, questioning, and refining what has been written. Note: It will remain your responsibility to ensure factual accuracy and that there is no plagiarism or breach of copyright, as AI has been known to make mistakes or copy previously published work from other sources.

Rewriting and refining text is an opportunity to review what you have said to see if it is accurate and reflects what you meant to say. Also, new information may have come to light since you planned and started writing your text, so now is the time to update your writing. For instance, many authors, when writing their books, go through several drafts, seeking improvement and greater accuracy.

Creating content

Create content for your document or websiteYou may have just ideas for the copy you want or may have produced a rough outline of what you want to say. You may have produced your first draft but you need help in getting it all together. I can help by adding material and organizing existing copy it into an acceptable, readable shape for your approval or for further redrafting.

Why you might want me to rewrite, refine, or revise your text

Reduce the word count (condense) if you are limited to how many you can use for an article

Take out duplication of material, especially where there are several contributors

Remove “padding” of superfluous words, expressions, and woolly phrasing in order to sharpen up the read to make it more clear and impactful

Change the tone, perhaps to make it more friendly or appeal to a different readership

Improve the readability by using plain English, getting rid of jargon and “waffle” language, such as “in order to”, “at the end of the day”, and “by way of”

Eliminate stilted and artificial phrasing of writing produced by AI language tools, such as Chat GPT

Author beware

Some known errors that AI language tools make when composing text

Lack of understanding of the nuances of a topic

Misinterpretations (AI programs often lack the ability to differentiate between facts, theories, and misleading information)

Copying already published work, which has copyright and plagiarism implications

Poor referencing by way of inaccurate or fictitious entries. This is a critical issue for academic work

Inventing material

What next?

I will produce a second draft for you to review, comment on, and amend.  All my amendments will be tracked in Microsoft Word so that you can make the final decision as to what is retained, amended, or deleted. Besides a normal proofread to eliminate spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, I will review the structure to check for repetition of material and inconsistencies of style and layout.

Summary

Rewriting, refining, and reviewing text. Fact checking and content creation

Being concise and accurate is critical for conveying your message and information. Rewriting and refining text is the route to achieving this goal, rooting out superfluous or duplicated material and dealing with inconsistencies. Changing the tone of your writing or simplifying text can make it more appealing and readable, or have new content created and facts checked.
